TOKYO, Japan — In a positive sign of easing semiconductor shortages, select “My Suica” and “Pasmo smartcards” are back on sale as of Sunday. These cards, essential for public transportation and cashless payments across Japan, were withdrawn in August 2023 due to difficulties in procuring the necessary chips.
Named Cards Available Again Amid Easing Chip Shortages
The newly available cards, which bear the owner’s name, were suspended alongside anonymous cards earlier in the year. While named cards have returned, anonymous cards remain off the market due to ongoing concerns over supply stability, according to East Japan Railway Co.
Suica and Pasmo cards, owned by JR East and Pasmo Co., respectively, can be obtained at train station ticket offices and certain machines for a deposit of 500 yen (approximately $3.40). Once loaded with funds, these cards offer seamless access to Japan’s extensive transportation networks.
The convenience of Suica and Pasmo cards has made them highly sought after by visitors to Japan, with some pre-paid cards fetching several times their 500-yen deposit price on reselling platforms.
Digital Alternatives and Tourist Options
During the shortage, tourists have had access to nonrefundable “Welcome Suica” cards, valid for 28 days, at select locations. As of Sunday, these cards are more widely available, including at major Tokyo stations such as Ueno, Shibuya, and Shinjuku.
While physical cards faced availability issues, digital mobile versions of Suica and Pasmo have remained unaffected and continued to be available for purchase. Since their introduction in 2006, these mobile cards have gained significant popularity, with JR East reaching a milestone of 20 million digital card issuances by March 2023.
This move to resume the sale of select physical cards signals a positive shift in supply chain stability and provides more options for both locals and tourists navigating Japan’s transportation networks.
Where to Purchase Suica and Pasmo Cards
People can obtain Suica and Pasmo cards at the following locations:
- Train Station Ticket Offices: Most train stations across Japan, particularly in major cities, have ticket offices where these cards are available.
- Selected Ticket Machines: Some ticket machines within these stations also sell Suica and Pasmo cards.
- Major Tokyo Train Stations: The “Welcome Suica” cards, specifically for tourists, can be purchased at prominent rail hubs, including Ueno, Shibuya, and Shinjuku stations.
These locations provide convenient access for both residents and tourists looking to acquire these essential transportation cards.
