Canned cocktails have long been a staple in Japan, often viewed as budget-friendly options rather than high-end beverages. However, Suntory, a leading whisky producer, is elevating this image with their latest creation: the Suntory Premium Highball Yamazaki. This innovative drink aims to redefine the perception of canned cocktails by incorporating top-quality ingredients.
Historically, canned cocktails in Japan have been associated with artificial flavors and lower-quality spirits. While they served as an affordable means to enjoy a drink, they rarely reflected true cocktail culture. Despite this, there remains a selection of canned cocktails that stand out in quality.
Suntory’s Premium Offering
Suntory is set to release a new version of its Yamazaki highball, which prominently features the esteemed Yamazaki whisky from their Osaka distillery, established in 1923. This distillery holds the distinction of being Japan’s first malt whisky producer, and its whisky is renowned for its rich flavor, making it an excellent choice for highball cocktails.
This isn’t the first time Suntory has introduced a canned Yamazaki highball; they previously launched one in 2022 to commemorate their centenary in whisky production. The latest iteration, titled “Bright and Rich Flavor,” emphasizes enhancements derived from Spanish oak barrels, distinguishing it from last year’s offering, which focused on Quercus oak.
